And should the base of my fingers (aka start of them) be aligned with the fret board?
And the thumb goes behind the pointer finger at all times or just the second fret?

You’re supposed to rest the lower bout of the classical in your lap, the neck pointing diagonally upwards. The thumb of your fretting hand is supposed to be right behind the middle of the neck at any time.

The Valencia is a little bit more expensive then the GAD 30 But the Gad 30 still sounds like a great guitar.
At the moment I haven’t tried any other guilds to be able to give you a decent answer.
