Would an Industrial Post shelf support a washer and dryer?

I am moving into an apartment soon that has very little space. My problem: The best place to put out cat’s litter box appears to be in the bathroom in the nook behind the door. However, that’s where the washer and dryer live. They are stacked and there is not enough room beside them to place the litter box.

Would an industrial post shelf be able to support this stack? Each shelf can hold up to 500lbs and they are quite stable, especially if you put extra supports between the legs. Here is a link to what I had in mind: http://www.storables.com/Shop/Shelving/Steel-Shelving/?launch_pg=itemPage&launch_sel=1007080&launch_pg_sp=true&title=18%26quot%3B+Industrial+Post+Steel+Shelf

I work at the store that sells these products and I know that they are very strong, but I don’t know much about washers or dryers, and I don’t know if they would be too heavy for this shelf. I would feel really bad if the cat were to be smashed underneath the washer and dryer if the shelf failed…

No, I wouldn’t do this. The shelves are made to take a static load, not one that vibrates heavily. There’s a reason that washers and dryers are put on the floor. They can shake a frame house if they’re not on a concrete floor on ground level, and a washer out of balance or with an unbalanced load in it, as happens sometimes if items settle funny after the wash cycle, can walk across the floor a little. I doubt if any manufacturer recommends putting a washer on anything but the plinths made for front loaders. Besides, if I was a cat, I don’t think I’d want to use my litter box with all that racket going on right over my head.

If you really really have to do this, I’d build a very solid plinth of wood that fits very closely into that space and/or is bolted to the wall and/or floor, with space underneath for the litter box, but check how high you can go before you end up with problems of cords, water hoses and drain stuff not reaching. And you’ll need some strong friends to lift the whole thing into place.

I’d just get rid of the cat.

With Washers and Dryers, it’s not only the weight you need to concern yourself with, the vibration as wel. GL!
